Prevent Flood Damage

A flood is one of those things that you can't always avoid if you live in certain areas. But, there are some things we can all do to protect our homes from flooding, no matter where we live.

  1. Next time it rains, go out and watch the water near your home. See how it flows around your home. If it heads straight for your home, then you know you need to change the water flow. If the water pools around your foundation, then you need to build up the ground near the foundation to get the water to flow away from your home.
  1. Next time there is a hard and fast rain, watch the street near your home. If the water pools in front of your home, then talk with the city about the water flow. If you have a drain on the street in front of your home and it is stopped up and can't handle the water, call the city that day and ensure it gets cleaned out.
  1. Think about having foundation vents installed. That way, if water comes directly at your house, the water can flow through your foundation. Without the vents, water can stop in your foundation and rise up through the floors.
  1. Dry proof your foundation and basement with sealing materials. This is probably best done by a professional, but if your house is prone to flooding, it will be worth it.
  1. Talk with a landscaper about retaining walls. You can build attractive retaining walls to keep water away from your house and have it flow away from your property.

Ready to take these steps to prevent flood damage? Today is a great day to start, and if you talk with your independent insurance agent, you may get even more ideas for preventing flood damage.
